Pope Francis has cancelled his scheduled audiences on Monday due to a 'slight flu-like state,' as announced by the Vatican. This precautionary measure comes just days before the Pontiff is set to embark on a trip to Belgium and Luxembourg.
The Vatican described the cancellation as a precautionary step to ensure the Pope's well-being. The 87-year-old Francis is scheduled to visit Luxembourg on Thursday and then continue his trip to Belgium, culminating in a Mass in Brussels on Sunday.
Having recently returned from an extensive 11-day journey through Asia, which marked the longest and farthest trip of his pontificate, Pope Francis has maintained a busy schedule of audiences. However, his health has been a concern in recent years, with battles against acute bronchitis and recurring bouts of influenza.
The Holy See press office stated that Francis is currently experiencing a 'flu-like state,' prompting the decision to cancel his audiences. Last winter, the Pope had to cancel a trip to Dubai due to health issues related to bronchitis and influenza.
During his visit to Belgium, Pope Francis is expected to commemorate the 600th anniversary of the country's main Catholic universities. Additionally, he will offer support to Belgians who have been deeply affected by the ongoing revelations of clergy sexual abuse and subsequent cover-ups.
