The Vatican proceeded with its Holy Year festivities despite Pope Francis' absence on Saturday, as the pontiff grappled with pneumonia and a complex respiratory infection. Doctors have described his condition as touch-and-go, indicating that he will remain hospitalized for at least another week.

Although Francis had a restful night's sleep, medical experts have highlighted the potential threat of sepsis, a severe blood infection that could arise as a complication of pneumonia. As of the latest update, there were no signs of sepsis, and the pope was responding well to the prescribed medications.

At 88 years old and with a history of chronic lung disease, Francis was admitted to Gemelli hospital after his bronchitis worsened. The medical team diagnosed him with a viral, bacterial, and fungal respiratory tract infection, followed by pneumonia in both lungs. Treatment involves rest, cortisone, antibiotics, and supplemental oxygen as needed.

Dr. Sergio Alfieri, the hospital's head of medicine and surgery, emphasized the critical risk of germs entering Francis' bloodstream, potentially leading to sepsis, organ failure, and death. Despite the ongoing medical care, the pope remains in a precarious state.

Deacons gathered at the Vatican for their special Jubilee weekend, which coincided with the start of the Holy Year. While Francis was unable to participate, the Vatican organized alternative arrangements for the scheduled Mass and blessings.

Amid concerns about his recovery, doctors stress that Francis will require time to recuperate and will continue to manage his chronic respiratory issues upon returning to the Vatican. The global Catholic community remains united in prayer for the pope's health and well-being during this challenging period.
