Pope Francis admitted to hospital as bronchitis battle continues

Pope Francis - (PA Archive)

Pope Francis has been admitted to hospital as he continues to struggle with bronchitis, Vatican officials confirmed.

The 88-year-old Pontiff, who has been battling the respiratory illness since last Thursday, will undergo "necessary diagnostic tests" following his morning audiences, including meetings with Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico and CNN chief Mark Thompson.

Despite his condition, the Pope has maintained a busy schedule, though he has recently relied on aides to deliver his prepared remarks during weekly general audiences. "Me, with my bronchitis, I cannot (read) still," he admitted on Wednesday.

The Pope's health has been a growing concern, with the elderly church leader facing multiple health challenges in recent years.

His mobility has been particularly affected, requiring him to use a wheelchair, walker or cane. Recent falls have resulted in injuries to his arm and chin.

Francis, who had part of a lung removed in his youth, has historically struggled with winter bronchitis. This latest hospital visit comes amid a series of health setbacks over the past two years, including repeated bouts of influenza.

The Vatican has not specified how long the Pope will remain in hospital, though they continue to monitor his condition closely.
