Popcorn With Zenger: Cumberbatch Shines In A Dark And Gripping 1980s Netflix Drama “Eric” ‌

“Eric” is Netflix’s latest drama series with serious award-season aspirations. The story centers on the tale of a lost child and his father, played by British star Benedict Cumberbatch.

Its a story with multiple plot lines that intersect in a postmodern fashion. The main storyline revolves around a family’s search for their lost child and the role of police investigators in that search.  This dark and convoluted plot is carried by Cumberbatch’s stellar performance.

However, the main character is 1980s New York and the series covers a lot of gound here: the criminal underworld, corruption within the NYPD, the homeless community, and 1980s puppet shows akin to those of Jim Henson

The set design deserves much credit for authentically recreating 1980s New York. From stereo equipment to clothing, the attention to detail evokes the era accurately.

While some elements may seem forced and unbelievable, if anything that only further showcases Cumberbatch’s acting prowess after his recent performance in latest “Doctor Strange” movie.

Cumberbatch shines in his role, convincingly portraying a father who believes that creating a puppet character, Eric (the titular character), will bring his son back home.

McKinley Belcher III also delivers a memorable performance as a gay NYPD detective who cares for a dying partner while hiding his sexuality from his colleagues.

The series reunites Clarke Peters and John Doman, both of whom starred in “The Wire,” arguably one of the greatest American television shows ever. Their performances are solid and add depth to the story.

An aside: Watching NFL Quarterback Lamar Jackson’s dynamic plays with the Ravens last season you knew he was gunning for accolades. It was no surprise he earned AP 2023 NFL Most Valuable Player award. This year he will be aiming for a Super Bowl.

In this series Cumberbatch portrays a grieving father, sleeps on the streets, engages in an epic fight scene with himself, and even dons a furry monster suit. His performance leaves little doubt about his range and talent.

Like Jackson, this season he is gunning for an award. The Golden Globes take note.
