'Poor to great' - Liverpool tipped to win major trophy following Luis Diaz deal

Liverpool have been backed to bring silverware to the club this season should they sign Luis Diaz.

The Reds are closing in on the signing of the 25-year-old from Porto before Monday’s deadline, with Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United also being credited with an interest.

It is understood that Liverpool are looking to pay an initial fee of £37m with a further £12m in add-ons for a player who Jurgen Klopp had identified as a first-choice option for the summer of 2022.

Diaz is believed to have had a £67m release clause within his contract, but Porto have been forced to take a financial hit after finishing third in their Champions League group behind Liverpool and Atletico Madrid, meaning the Reds have been able to see a £37m offer accepted.

FANS REACT: Liverpool supporters give verdict on stunning move for Luis Diaz

Former Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny has said that Liverpool have ‘turned a poor window into a great one’ following a deal to bring Diaz to Anfield.

Kenny, who played for Leeds United and Queens Park Rangers, among others, in his playing career has argued why Liverpool could now be favourites to win the Champions League should they sign Diaz.

“He looked nailed on for Tottenham so that is a massive blow for them,” Kenny told Football Insider .

“It will be a massive signing for Liverpool and it adds to their firepower.

“Obviously they already have quality players in that area and it just makes them even stronger.

“Liverpool know they need extra firepower if they are going to hunt down Man City.

“They might also have one eye on the Champions League and you would back them to win it if Diaz signs.

“What an exciting move for Liverpool. Their window has gone from poor to great in the blink of an eye.”
