Pontypridd Post Office set to close with no replacement planned

Pontypridd's Post Office is due to close on December 23 and it won't reopen unless new operators are found. The high street branch has been run by a temporary operator who has resigned and no replacements have yet been secured.

In a statement, the Post Office said it is working hard to find a new Postmaster but confirmed that the shop would temporary close from December 23. The Post Office also confirmed that it is in talks with an interested party.

A Post Office spokesperson said: "Pontypridd Post Office is operated by a temporary Postmaster who has recently resigned and the branch will be temporarily closed from December 23. We know how important a Post Office is to a community and we are working hard to try to restore service as soon as possible. We are in talks with an interested party. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure. In the interim alternative branches include Central Square, Park Street and Rhydyfelin.”

In 2015 the Mill Street Post Office was subject to a fire which left the town without a Post Office for three months when a temporary service was set up. The Post Office was also affected by flooding during Storm Dennis.

While the Royal Mail and the Post Office are two separate entities, Royal Mail post workers have planned strike action on December 23 and December 24. The full addresses of alternative Post Office branches that people can use during the temporary closure of the Post Office on Mill Street, include:

  • Central Square Post Office, 1A Central Square, Trallwn, CF37 4PN
  • Park Street Post Office 10 Park Street, Treforest, Pontypridd, CF37 1SN
  • Rhydyfelin Post Office Duffryn Road, Pontypridd, CF37 5NR

Heledd Fychan MS said: “Having a Post Office in Pontypridd town centre is vital both for the town and nearby residents. With more and more banks having closed, such as the HSBC in Pontypridd, the Post Office has become even more important to so many people by supporting them with their banking needs, as well as a whole myriad of different services. We must not lose Pontypridd Post Office, and I urge the Post Office to find an urgent solution so that the service continues after Christmas.”

Heledd also expressed her solidarity with Royal Mail staff who are currently striking in order to protect their own terms and conditions as well as royal mail services. She added: “Both the Post Office and the Royal Mail are essential services, and more must be done to protect both.”
