Kalyn Ponga will endure an interrupted NRL pre-season after suffering a calf injury at Newcastle training.
The Knights confirmed on Friday the superstar fullback had been hurt, with the club confident the injury is not serious.
Ponga has four weeks to be fit for the Maori All Stars game against the Indigenous side on February 11, with the Knights' first trial on the same weekend.
The injury comes as Newcastle weigh up whether to move the 24-year-old into the halves to partner recruit Jackson Hastings.
Ponga missed the end of last season with a concussion, having endured minor injury issues in most years of his career.
