Poll Shows Biden's Lead Over Trump Vanishing Amid Criminal Trial

A recent Quinnipiac University poll has revealed a significant shift in the dynamics of the upcoming presidential race, with President Biden's lead over former President Trump narrowing. This change comes despite Trump's ongoing criminal trial in New York City related to charges of falsifying business records.

The poll indicates that Biden and Trump are now tied at 46% support, marking a dead heat in the race. When independent candidates Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Dr. Cornel West, and Jill Stein are included, the numbers remain close, with Trump holding a slight lead at 39% to Biden's 38%.

Trump's trial, which commenced last week with jury selection and opening arguments this week, has not seemed to deter his supporters. The former president has pleaded not guilty to all charges and has consistently maintained his innocence, labeling the trial as a 'political persecution.'

Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, Trump's numbers have seen a notable improvement since the previous poll in March, where he trailed Biden by three points. Biden's job approval ratings have also taken a hit, with only 35% supporting his performance, down from 37% in March.

When asked about the charges Trump faces in the trial, opinions were divided, with 46% believing he did something illegal and 45% disagreeing. A significant portion, 27%, felt that while Trump's actions may have been unethical, they were not necessarily illegal.

If Trump were to be convicted on the charges, the poll suggests that a majority of voters, 62%, claim it would not impact their decision at the ballot box. However, 21% stated they would be less likely to vote for Trump in such a scenario, while 15% indicated they would be more inclined to support him.

Trump has expressed frustration over the trial's timing, arguing that it unfairly hampers his ability to campaign effectively, giving Biden an advantage. He has vowed to 'tell the truth' if called to testify, emphasizing his commitment to defending his innocence.

As the race tightens and public opinion remains divided, the upcoming months promise to be crucial in determining the outcome of the 2024 presidential election.
