Poll reveals over half of people don't want to see Boris Johnson become Prime Minister

A poll shows more than half of Britons would be unhappy to see Boris Johnson return as Prime Minister. The results of the YouGov poll have been released today (October 21).

The poll of 3,429 adults suggested 27% would be happy to see Mr Johnson return to office, compared with 52% who did not like the idea. Conservative voters were more favourable, with 25% saying they would be happy and 31% would be very happy.

However, 13% of Tory voters said they would be very unhappy and 8% fairly unhappy. Current Prime Minister Liz Truss resigned yesterday just six weeks into the job, making her tumultuous premiership the shortest in British history.

It means there is another Conservative leadership contest currently taking place. Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt became the first candidate to officially enter the race earlier.

Mr Johnson and ex-Chancellor Rishi Sunak have also secured the backing of some Tory MPs but have not yet confirmed whether they will run. Contenders to succeed Ms Truss have until 2pm on Monday to gather the support of 100 MPs to run, with a new Prime Minister declared by next Friday.
