Downing Street has said it could scrap the current role of the Prime Minister’s ethics adviser following the resignation of Lord Geidt.

No 10 said Boris Johnson will review the role and decide if it needs to be overhauled or replaced by something else.

The PM could opt to select a direct replacement for Lord Geidt or he could decide to transfer the job of advising him on matters relating to the ministerial code to a new body.

Asked whether a new adviser is being sought, the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman noted a number of issues raised by Lord Geidt and said Mr Johnson wants to “carefully consider those and reflect on them before taking a decision on how best to fulfil that commitment about ensuring rigorous oversight and scrutiny of ministerial interests”.

Pressed on if Lord Geidt will be replaced, the spokesman said: “We haven’t made a final decision on how best to carry out that function, whether it relates to a specific individual or not. He will carefully consider that before setting out the next steps.”

It came after Lord Geidt used his resignation letter to warn that the Prime Minister risked making a "mockery" of the ministerial code if he was to proceed with potential changes to the Government's trade policy.
