At least 10 Polish coal miners have been injured in a powerful tremor that shook the Rydultowy coal mine about 1,200 meters underground on Thursday. The cause of the tremor remains unclear.
The accident occurred around 8 a.m., according to a spokesperson for the Polish Coal Mining Group. Of the 68 miners in the area at the time, 15 have been brought to the surface, with 10 requiring hospitalization. Rescue efforts involving airborne ambulances and 10 teams of personnel are ongoing.
Head of the ambulance service in Katowice, the main city in the mining region, reported that the hospitalized miners are in stable condition. Tragically, two miners lost their lives in separate incidents at the Rydultowy mine in 2019 and 2020.
The Rydultowy mine, which dates back to 1792, currently employs around 2,000 miners. It is noted that some coal mines in Poland are susceptible to methane gas explosions.
