A police officer was shot at and injured in a militant attack in Srinagar on Sunday afternoon.
According to the J&K police, terrorists fired upon and injured Inspector Masroor Ahmad near Eidgah, Srinagar.
Official sources said the police officer, who is a resident of nearby area of Yachipora, was in a cricket ground in Eidgah when militants opened multiple shots at him from a close range. “The area has been cordoned off and a case registered,” the police said.
The injured policeman was shifted to hospital for treatment. According to officials in the hospital, the police officer had sustained three bullet injuries in the militant attack. His condition is stated to be “critical”.
Security was heightened in capital Srinagar following the attack. Security forces set up multiple checkpoints and searched vehicles.
The attack comes just a day after Director General of Police Dilbag Singh said militancy was on its last leg and scores of police stations have reported zero-violence in Kashmir this year.
