Police urging football fans to come forward after girl, 15, wounded at City v Liverpool match in 'malicious attack'

Police are urging football fans to come forward after a teenage Manchester City fan was wounded by a pint cup filled with coins during the Blue's match against Liverpool. The 15-year-old suffered a one-inch gash to her head after the plastic reusable beer cup was thrown, shortly after Liverpool's first equaliser, 20 minutes into the Carabao Cup on December 22.

The girl was rushed to the Etihad Stadium medical centre after the missile, said to have been thrown from the section containing the approximately 5,500 Liverpool fans, directly above where the girl was sat with her family in the second tier of the South Stand, shattered on impact. The wound had to be glued back together and her father shared an image of her blood-stained scarf with the Manchester Evening News .

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) are investigating the incident and have urged "those who attended the game who know who is responsible" to speak up. A force spokesman said: "GMP are appealing for further information after a 15-year-old girl was wounded by a pint cup filled with coins at a football match in Manchester.

"Superintendent Gareth Parking of GMP added: “GMP will not tolerate violent or malicious behaviour in any situation, this does NOT exclude football matches or sports games. Clearly throwing objects in a confined area can be dangerous and have serious and sometimes devastating consequences.

“We are continuing to investigate this incident and would urge those who attended the game who know who is responsible or could have any information to assist us further, to please come forward.

You can report any information to GMP by calling 101 or report information online via the website, quoting log 1880 of 22/12/2022. Alternatively, you can report information anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
