Police update as cyclist suffers 'serious injuries' after crash with van

Police have given an update after a cyclist was rushed to hospital following a crash with a van.

Emergency services were called to a report of a crash involving a van and the cyclist on the junction of Queens Drive and Utting Avenue, Walton at around 2.50pm on Sunday.

The cyclist was described as suffering serious injuries following the incident.

Merseyside Police closed Queens Drive and Utting Avenue southbound as well as Richard Kelly Drive while emergency services attended the scene.

Drivers were also told to avoid the area.

A witness to the incident told the ECHO an ambulance from North West Ambulance Service was only briefly at the scene before taking the cyclist to hospital.

Photos taken following the incident, show the bike still lying on the grass verge next to where the crash happened a number of hours later.

Merseyside Police confirmed the driver of the van stopped at the scene and is assisting officers with their enquiries.

In an update today, a spokesperson for Merseyside Police said the cyclist is still in hospital receiving treatment and is in a serious but stable condition.

In their statement on Sunday, they said: "At around 2.50pm today (Sunday, February 6) emergency services were called to a report of a collision involving a van and a cyclist on the junction of Queens Drive and Utting Avenue, Walton.

"The man on the bicycle has been taken to hospital with serious injuries and is in a stable condition.

"The driver stopped at the scene and is assisting officers with their enquiries.

"Queens Drive and Utting Avenue southbound carriageway, and Richard Kelly Drive are closed while emergency services attend the incident.

"We ask that drivers avoid the area and find an alternative route. We thank you for your patience as we deal with this incident.
