Police team up with Lanarkshire locals to help tackle fly-tipping problem

Police officers teamed up with locals in Newarthill to carry out a litter pick on an area used for fly-tipping.

Last week, officers sent out an appeal for the public’s help after a number of wheelie bin thefts, wilful fireraisings and fly-tipping incidents.

This week, community officers teamed up with local residents and the Newarthill community council to carry out a litter-pick at the affected area.

They collected 39 bags of rubbish, two brown bins and two burnt out blue bins.

Officers working in the Newarthill area of the town are asking local residents to check CCTV footage and report any incidents following a spate of damage caused across the area in recent weeks.

They are also urging people across Lanarkshire to report such incidents to Crimestoppers, or either North or South Lanarkshire Council, or to report fly tipping contact Dumb Dumpers online.

A spokesperson for Lanarkshire Police Division said: “Fly-tipping poses a threat to humans, wildlife and the environment.

“It’s ugly – spoiling towns and countryside.

“If you have any information in relation to fly tipping or anti-social behaviour in your area, please contact 101.

“Always call 999 in an emergency. If you’d rather stay anonymous, contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
