Police swarm street after man, 35, hit by bus in city centre

Emergency services swarmed a busy city centre street after a pedestrian was hit by a bus.

Police were called out to Portland Street in Manchester city centre following the collision on Wednesday night (January 11). Officers arrived at the scene shortly after 5.30pm, when it was announced that bus services due to depart from Piccadilly Gardens would be diverted to nearby Chorlton Street.

The man, aged 35, was taken to hospital from the scene, sustaining minor injuries in the collision. Greater Manchester Police confirmed in a statement that officers were called out to the scene of the incident following reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and bus on Portland Street, Manchester.

Pictures taken after the crash show police at the scene of a usually busy Portland Street, close to Piccadilly Gardens. Police also confirmed that the driver of the bus involved remained at the scene and assisted with enquiries, with no arrests made.

“At around 5:40pm yesterday evening (Wednesday 11 January 2023), officers were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving a bus and a pedestrian on Portland Street in Manchester City Centre", a spokesperson said.

"Emergency services attended the scene and a 35-year-old man was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The bus driver remained at the scene to assist with enquiries.”

The North West Ambulance Service has also been contacted for a comment.
