Police 'swarm' Scottish town after warning to avoid area

POLICE "swarmed" a Scottish town last night following reports of a major incident.

Residents in Stonehaven shared their concerns on Facebook after Police Scotland cordoned off an area in the town centre.

One residents said it was "the most police" they had ever seen in the town.

Police Scotland urged people to "avoid the area" in a Facebook alert on Saturday night at around 9pm.

The force has now released a statement, saying a 17-year-old boy had been arrested and then charged, and an 18-year-old boy was taken to hospital.

The “serious assault” was reported at 8.15pm.

A police spokesperson said: “At about 8.15pm on Saturday March 15, officers received a report of a serious assault on Market Square in Stonehaven.

“An 18-year-old man was taken to the hospital for treatment.

“A 17-year-old male has been arrested in connection and enquiries are ongoing.”

Detective sergeant Niall Mullen said: "This is being treated as an isolated incident and there was no risk to the wider public."
