Police stopped a car in Cheetham Hill - they found £50k of 'dirty money' hidden on board

Police seized more than £50,000 of suspected 'dirty money' when patrols stopped a car in Manchester. Officers made the discovery when they swooped on the vehicle in Cheetham Hill on Monday afternoon.

Traffic cops found the cash hidden on board. A man, aged 37, was arrested, Greater Manchester Police said.

The swoop was part of a GMP campaign to tackle money launder, dubbed Operation Falcon.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of possession of criminal property. He was interviewed and later released under investigation, according to GMP.

The find was made by officers from GMP’s Roads Policing Unit in Cheetham Hill on Monday afternoon.

The swoop follows an intelligence-led operation by GMP’s Money Laundering Team within the Economic Crime and Cyber Unit (ECU) in partnership with Roads Policing Unit, GMP said in a statement.

Police released pictures which showed bundles inside bags on board the car.

Temporary Detective Superintendent Joe Harrop, lead for GMP’s Operation Falcon said: "We are working hard to tackle cash-based money laundering across Greater Manchester, which often funds serious and organised crime.

"Monday’s seizure is just another example of the fantastic work that the team are carrying out as part of Operation Falcon.

"In the five months since its inception, Operation Falcon has seized over £750k from across Greater Manchester as part of the force’s crackdown on money laundering, and we will continue to target those suspected to be involved and reinvest the money back into the communities of Greater Manchester."
