Reports of gunshot in St Ann's street as police issue statement

Police officers are carrying out an investigation after reports a gun was fired in a street in St Ann's. Nottinghamshire Police were called to Tulip Avenue shortly before 5.20pm on Tuesday (May 17) evening after witnesses reported what they believed to be a gunshot.

Nobody has been injured and enquiries are continuing to trace suspects. Armed response units immediately attended the scene and searched the area, with specialist search teams remaining in the area through Wednesday (May 18) as extensive searches are carried out.

Detective Inspector Ruby Burrow, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "We are taking this report extremely seriously and would like to speak to anyone who saw anything suspicious in the Hungerhill Road and Tulip Close areas yesterday afternoon. We would especially like to speak to anyone who saw two men dressed in dark clothing who were seen in the area that time.

"Although firearms incidents are thankfully very rare, we are aware they can cause considerable concern in our communities. For this reason, our officers will be undertaking additional local reassurance patrols in the coming days as a full and thorough investigation is carried out."

Ochombia Oladipupo, who has lived in Tulip Avenue for six years, said: "Yesterday I was inside cooking dinner and I didn't know anything had happened, I came outside when I noticed police and saw that there were a lot here. I think it will have been after 5pm that I saw them.

"They've been here ever since. I've never seen something like this happen here, I like it here I think it is a nice area."

Sarah Cadsworth, 24, who was out walking nearby, said: "My friend told me about it last night and this is the first time I'm seeing it. It looks like they are searching for something, doesn’t it? You do see police around here but it’s not usually like this. It is pretty shocking."

Japhet Ncube, 59, has lived in St Ann’s for nearly 20 years. The cordon is set up right by his house.

He said: "Last night I was going to work and I noticed there was a police car round the back and also there was one parked on the street outside - so I knew something had happened then. The tape only went up today, I only noticed it today anyway. I don't know what has happened."

One woman, who lives nearby and wanted to remain anonymous, said: "All I heard was what sounded like a shot - that was it. It was at around 5.45pm or 6pm I think.

"I heard something straight away but then I heard nothing, so I didn’t know what had happened. Then my friend rang me up and said there was police outside. It was awful."

Another resident, who also wanted to stay anonymous, said: "I was in but I didn't hear anything, I just saw them (police) setting the tape up last night. That was at around 6.30pm.

"I don’t even know what’s happened - I don't think anyone does. I just hope if someone has been hurt, that they are OK."

Anyone who has any information or video footage that could help the investigation is asked to call 101 quoting incident 561 of 17 May. Information can also be passed in confidence to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
