Police seize weapon from driver after gunshots heard in coastal town

A motorist was prevented by police from driving away from the harbour area of Portavogie after officers heard a number of gunshots being fired late last night (September 24).

Officers Chris and Aaron, of the Holywood and Peninsula Neighbourhood Team, were on a pro-active patrol in the coastal town on the east side of Northern Ireland when they heard the shots. They promptly stopped a vehicle leaving the area, and a subsequent search of it uncovered a firearm that was seized.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland said that the driver was cautioned for a number of offences. It added that enquiries are continuing and that the driver will be interviewed in due course. Other legally held firearms were later seized as a precaution from an address with the assistance of part-time officers.
