Police seen searching underneath city centre street after stabbing

Police were seen searching underneath a city centre street after a stabbing.

Matrix officers armed with shovels and metal detectors carried out the underground search on St Vincent Street, off London Road, this morning after opening two drains on the road. It came after a man was found with multiple stab wounds and a fractured jaw on Seymour Street in the early hours of Monday.

Police and paramedics were called to the area at around 12.35am and the 25-year-old was taken to hospital with injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening, police said. The victim remains in hospital in a stable condition.

People were seen walking home from a night out in the city centre when they stumbled across the police scene at around 1am. One woman, from Scotland, was staying in an Airbnb on Seymour Street when she saw flashing blue lights outside her window.

The woman said she saw the injured man lying on the ground before paramedics arrived and helped him into an ambulance. She said: “I’ve never seen so many police in my life. We’d been out so we’re just glad that it didn’t happen when we were on our way home.”

Seymour Street remained sealed off by police today as drivers were asked to avoid the area. Officers were seen focusing their attention on a pile of abandoned belongings including an oxygen mask on Seymour Street, and searching the window ledges of the X1 Lettings student accommodation block.

Photos taken at the scene show a matrix officer carrying a cardboard box, while another searche took place inside the bins on Lord Nelson Street. A ladder was also propped against a wall on Ward Street as police carried out their investigations into the stabbing.

Two men have been arrested in connection with the incident and remain in custody for questioning. They include a 35-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of Section 18 assault after being stopped and searched by officers at the junction of Seymour Street and London Road.

A 48-year-old man was also later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and possession with intent to supply a Class A drug.

Detective Inspector Neil Dillon said: "We are in the very early stages of an investigation after a man was found with stab wounds on Seymour Street in the early of hours of this morning. Although two arrests have been made, our enquiries continue, and we’d still urge anyone who witnessed the incident, saw any suspicious behaviour, to please contact us.

"Either tell us directly or anonymously through Crimestoppers. The use of knives and any weapons is reckless and will not be tolerated, and can have devastating consequences, not only for the victim and their family but also for the offenders involved.

"If you have any information about this incident, please DM Merseyside Police's social media desk on Twitter @MerPolCC or Facebook ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre’ quoting incident 22000597042. You can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously, on 0800 555 111 or via their online form at: https://crimestoppers-uk.org/give-information."
