The elderly woman was struck by the vehicle as she crossed Chester Road in Shiney Row, Houghton-le-Spring, at around 3.20pm on January 16.
She was given initial treatment by paramedics at the scene but later taken to hospital with head injuries and a fractured ankle.
The driver of the car stayed at the scene to help police, but officers are now asking anyone who saw the incident to come forward.
“We are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time and may have witnessed the collision. We are particularly interested to hear from anyone who has dash-cam footage,” said a spokesman for Northumbria Police.
