Police searched the site of a well-known seaside hotel after two people were spotted near the building, which is undergoing regeneration.
Tynemouth's famous Park Hotel is set to re-open later this year following a multimillion-pound refurbishment by new owners The Inn Collection Group.
But on Saturday afternoon several police cars were called to the site, after intruders were spotted nearby.
Officers are treating the incident as a suspected burglary, although nothing has been reported stolen.
A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “Just before 3.45pm on Saturday, we received a report that two people were seen in the area of Park Hotel on Grand Parade in Tynemouth in a suspected burglary.
“Police attended the scene, however the males had already left the area. A search of the area was conducted, however nothing was reported as stolen.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact police."
The art deco Park Hotel has been closed for some time but is now set to re-open with a new look and a new name, The Tynemouth Castle Inn.
The redevelopment includes an extensive remodelling of the current bar and dining areas along with the site’s existing rooms. A two-storey extension is being built in place of a previously under-used function and events area, which will create additional bedroom space for guests.
A further single-storey building will add a fish and chip takeaway and ice cream parlour.
Anyone with information about the burglary should call Northumbria Police on 101 quoting log NP-20230211-0702.
