Police Search Landfill For Evidence In Missing Michigan Mother Case

Michigan mother Ashley Elkins missing since January 2 in Warren.

Authorities are intensifying their search efforts for missing Michigan mother-of-two Ashley Elkins, who vanished on January 2 while running errands in Warren. The investigation has led police to focus on her ex-boyfriend, Deandre Howard Booker, who was arrested in Flint and charged with providing false information to law enforcement.

Search teams clad in yellow suits meticulously combed through the Pine Tree Acres Landfill in Lenox Township, concentrating on a specific area within the landfill. Roseville Police Chief Mitch Berlin expressed confidence in the search, stating they are moving in the right direction to uncover crucial evidence.

Elkins' family members are deeply concerned as her disappearance is uncharacteristic, with her last known location being near her ex's Roseville apartment. Her car was discovered in Roseville, just a few miles from her residence, prompting authorities to search her ex's apartment and seize a trash dumpster as part of the investigation.

Booker, who had been in a relationship with Elkins for about a year before their breakup in September, is suspected by the family to be involved in her disappearance. Prosecutors revealed that Booker had made plans to flee the state, as evidenced by his online searches for escape routes and tactics to evade law enforcement.

During Booker's arraignment, it was disclosed that he had a history of legal issues, including being discharged from the military for going AWOL and facing charges of larceny and possessing fake identification documents. The prosecution argued that Booker's behavior indicated a propensity to flee if granted bond, leading to a substantial cash/surety bond being set.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities remain committed to seeking justice for Elkins and her family. Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido emphasized the importance of providing accurate information to aid in resolving the case and alleviate the anguish experienced by loved ones awaiting answers.

A probable cause hearing via Zoom is scheduled for January 22, followed by a preliminary exam on January 29 to further delve into the circumstances surrounding Elkins' disappearance.
