Police say fireworks were thrown at cops after angry crowd surround a house in Bonhill

Police have launched a probe after they say officers were hit with objects - including fireworks - in Bonhill after a crowd targeted a house.

Eyewitnesses say a crowd of up to 200 people surrounded the property in Braehead last night (March 16), with video footage from the scene showing fireworks being let off and a huge police presence - including a helicopter.

One told the Lennox: "There was a mob of about 200 people attacking a house. There were police cars everywhere and the helicopter was up with its searchlight on. It was really scary."

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said the group would not leave when told to by officers and a car was vandalised. The residents of the house were removed.

Nobody was injured in the incident, with police saying they are now trying to trace those involved.

This incident comes just weeks after a crowd targeted a property in Brucehill, Dumbarton, in what police described as a "large scale disturbance."

Up to 300 people gathered in Graham Road on February 28 with videos posted online showing fireworks being set off close to homes in the residential street. Police later said the incident was a result of "inaccurate information posted online".

The crowd threw objects, including bricks.

Police told the Lennox Herald this week they are working to identify those involved and are "following a positive line of enquiry".

A spokeswoman said that work to identify those involved in the Bonhill incident was now also underway.

She said: "An investigation is under way after a number of objects, including fireworks, were thrown at officers in Braehead, Bonhill on Thursday March 16 2023

"Police were called around 7.50pm, to reports a group of people had gathered outside a house in Braehead, Bonhill.

"Officers attended and the occupants of the house were removed from the property.

"The crowd, some of whom, had their faces covered, refused to disperse and a vehicle was vandalised. Public order officers were deployed as some members of the group began to throw items, including fireworks, towards police officers.

"No officers have been injured and the incident was brought under control. Enquiries are ongoing to identify those involved. "
