Police launch murder investigation after fatal shooting at Belfast social club

Police earlier rushed to the scene of a fatal shooting incident at the Donegal Celtic social club in West Belfast.

One man was shot dead in the establishment off Suffolk Road. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland confirmed a murder investigation had been launched.

Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell said: "At approximately 2.45pm, police received a report that two masked men had entered the Donegal Celtic Sports and Social Club shortly before 2.30pm and shot the man a number of times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Both gunmen are believed to have made their escape on foot along Suffolk Road.

"The investigation is at a very early stage and I would urge anyone with information or anyone who was in the Suffolk Road area at the time the shooting took place and seen two men running from the club or who may have captured dashcam footage to contact us on 101 quoting reference number 1120 02/10/22."

There was a heavy police presence at the scene in the aftermath. Eyewitnesses described the incident as looking like a "professional hit".

Two masked individuals are believed to have entered the club before at least one of them opened fire with a handgun.

Two ambulances were parked within the grounds while a PSNI helicopter monitored the scene from above.

A significant number of officers are at the site, with the area cordoned off.

The PSNI said part of Suffolk Road is closed and a number of diversions are in place.

Sinn Fein MP for West Belfast Paul Maskey said: "There is shock in the local community after a serious shooting incident at a west Belfast club.

"I condemn those responsible. There is no place for guns on our streets.

"Anyone with information on this shooting should immediately bring it forward to the police."
