Police respond to Ilkeston car meet after reports of drag racing

Concerned members of the public reported drag racing and excessive noise at a weekend car meet. On Sunday, August 21, police attended a car meet on Merlin Way, Ilkeston, but when they arrived most of those in attendance had already left the area.

Derbyshire's roads policing unit responded to the incident alongside Erewash police officers. They issued a Section 59 warning to one driver at the scene, reports Derbyshire Live.

This warning refers to Section 59 of the Police and Reform Act 2002, which allows a police officer to seize and remove a vehicle if they believe it is being driven inconsiderately or carelessly, and is causing or likely to cause alarm, distress or annoyance to the public.

An update was shared by the police units on Twitter, as well as an image of the empty road where the car meet had taken place.

It said: "Reports of a car meet taking place, excessive noise and drag racing! Enter the party poopers…Section 59 warning issued to one driver, others appeared not to hang around."
