Police remain at the scene fire in Sunderland as images this morning show damage to roof

Police officers remain at the scene after a blaze severely damaged a building in Sunderland on Friday.

The fire started at approximately 5.15pm at a property on Hylton Road not too far from Sunderland Royal Hospital.

Five fire engines were called to battle the blaze as well as a police van and an engineer from Northern Gas to deal with the incident.

From images taken by our photographer, Simon Greener, it is clear that the blaze has caused substantial damage to the structure of the building.

The roof has been especially badly affected as well as the front windows.

At 8.35pm a spokesman for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "Our crews are currently still at the scene of a building fire on Hylton Road in Sunderland. We still have five appliances at the scene and a level platform."

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police told our reporter, Katie Anderson, who was at the scene: "We were called at around 5.15 this evening. We are currently at the scene assisting the Fire Service with a fire at a building on Hylton Road. We have attended to assist with traffic management to ensure public safety."

Hylton Road has now re-opened in both directions.
