Police release update over 'altercation' involving Patrick Vieira at Goodison Park

Merseyside Police said no prosecution will follow an incident involving Patrick Vieira and a supporter on the Goodison Park pitch following Everton's win over Crystal Palace.

The comeback victory sparked scenes of jubilation, with supporters running onto the pitch to celebrate a result that guaranteed the club's Premier League survival.

Amid those scenes an "altercation" involving a fan and Vieira, the Palace manager, took place that sparked inquiries by Merseyside Police. As Vieira made his way back to his side’s dressing room across the pitch a fan appeared to say something to him. The former France international and Arsenal star then turned and appeared to try and kick him.

When asked about the incident post-match, Vieira said: "No I have nothing to say about that.”

On Friday, Merseyside Police confirmed: " We are working with Everton FC to gather all available CCTV footage and are speaking to witnesses. No formal complaint has been received and enquiries into the incident are ongoing."

The force has now confirmed no prosecution will follow the incident. In a statement released on social media, it said: "Merseyside Police has concluded inquiries into an altercation on the pitch following the Everton v Crystal Palace match on Thursday, May 19. Officers have spoken to both men involved and the opportunity to make a formal complaint or support a prosecution was declined."
