Police are seeking help to find a man who allegedly stole a car at knifepoint near a school yesterday afternoon.

Police are investigating after a woman was allegedly carjacked at knifepoint in Mackay.

Speaking at a police press conference, Mackay detectives say a 30-year-old woman was parking her car on Goldsmith Street in East Mackay just before 3:30pm when she was approached by a man.

"He approached her and opened the driver's door and demanded that she exited the vehicle," Mackay Whitsunday District Detective Inspector Emma Novosel said.

"The female victim resisted slightly, at which time the male person presented a knife.

"She exited her vehicle and the male person got in the car and drove away."

Detective Inspector Novosel said the woman had been going to an appointment at Victoria Park State School but did not have children with her.

"We've got no reason to believe he'd been to the school or that he was targeting anyone in particular.

"The car is still outstanding ... it's a blue 2019 Ford Endura station wagon and has personalised plates 38 KLA."

Multiple victims

A second woman from the same area has also come forward to say a man had approached her on February 14.

"[She] had parked her own vehicle in the driveway and she challenged a man who was trying to enter the car.

"He told her he'd made an error and he thought it was his car and ran away."

Investigations have revealed the man, in his mid-to-late 30s, attended the Ampol Service Station at Farleigh about 5pm on the same day.

"He's entered into that business and purchased some items from the business using the victim's bank cards," Detective Inspector Novosel said.

"Whenever there is a crime committed against a person using violence like that it's always concerning, particularly at that time of day in what is usually a busy area."

Police are seeking information from witnesses or anyone with relevant dash cam footage of the area.
