UPDATE 9PM: A man who allegedly fired a pellet gun at police - hitting a sargeant and a constable -has been charged after a siege at Maryland on Thursday.
Police said on Thursday evening that a man allegedly armed with a knife confronted them when they arrived at a house in Warkworth Street at 9.20am following reports of a domestic dispute.
Two women and two children were in the home, police said.
A perimeter around the area was set up and during negotiations, police allege the man armed himself with an air pellet gun and fired several rounds at police.
A sergeant and a constable were hit, police alleged, suffering minor injuries that did not require further treatment.
Specialist units - including negotiators, tactical operations regional support and police rescue - were deployed to the scene.
The man surrendered to police at 11.15am and was arrested.
He was later charged with common assault (domestic violence), destroy or damage property (domestic violence), discharge firearm with intent to resist arrest, fire firearm manner likely injure persons/property, use unauthorised prohibited firearm, not keep firearm safely-prohibited firearm, armed with intent commit indictable offence, assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, and assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm.
The man was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Friday.
UPDATE 12.20pm:
A man is in custody after a stand-off with police at Maryland on Thursday ended peacefully.
Police say the situation ramped up when the man fired rounds at officers from what is now known to be a paint pellet gun.
Inspector Shane Buggy said officers were called to a Warkworth Avenue home about 9.20am after reports of a domestic incident.
There, they allegedly found a man with a knife.
Inspector Buggy said the situation escalated when the man allegedly fired what is now known to be a paint pellet gun at the officers, causing "superficial injuries".
Four other people - two adults and two children - were inside the home at the time.
"The people who were inside the premise are obviously shaken by their ordeal but they have no physical injuries," Inspector Buggy said.
The man has been taken to Waratah Police Station where he is helping investigators with their inquiries.
Inspector Buggy said mental health issues "will be considered" as part of the investigation.

Police are urging people to steer clear of a police operation taking place at Newcastle on Thursday morning.
Officers were called to a home in a side street off Minmi Road at Maryland just before 10.30am.
Early reports indicate upwards of a dozen police vehicles have arrived at the scene.
Police have not yet confirmed the exact nature of the operation.
