A police officer at the Israeli Embassy in the Serbian capital Belgrade was shot in the neck with a crossbow in a suspected terror attack on Saturday. The officer shot the attacker, who later died, according to N1. The injured officer has been taken to the hospital and will require an operation to remove an arrow from his neck.
Serbia’s Interior Minister Ivica Dacic labeled the incident a “terrorist attack” and mentioned that several individuals believed to be connected to the incident have been apprehended. Dacic indicated that the individuals involved were already known to the police and security services, specifically mentioning members of the Wahhabi movement, a strict branch of Islam.
A spokesperson for the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs also characterized the incident as an “attempted terrorist attack” in a statement. Fortunately, none of the ministry's employees were harmed during the incident.
Israel-linked institutions in Europe have heightened their security measures in response to potential threats following Israel’s ongoing conflict in Gaza. The conflict was initiated after the Islamist militant group Hamas conducted cross-border raids in Israel on October 7.
