A tragic incident unfolded in Greenville, Texas, on Monday as a police officer was fatally ambushed during a shootout with a fleeing suspect. Officer Cooper Dawson of the Greenville Police Department was struck in his side and leg during the confrontation, which occurred in a wooded area behind homes on Picket Street at 7:40 p.m.
The fatal encounter began when Dawson initiated a traffic stop of the suspect near the 3500 block of Picket Street. The suspect fled on foot, leading Dawson to pursue him into the wooded area behind a home at 3517 Pickett Street, where the suspect ambushed and shot Dawson multiple times.
Despite his critical injuries, Officer Dawson displayed exceptional courage by returning fire and striking the suspect. Both Dawson and the suspect were taken to Hunt County Regional Hospital, with Dawson later being airlifted to Medical City Plano, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.
The suspect's condition remains undisclosed at this time. The Greenville Police Department expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Officer Dawson, highlighting his dedication to public service and commitment to protecting the community.
Officer Dawson, a highly respected member of the force who had previously served with the Garland Police Department, is remembered for his selfless sacrifice. He is the first Greenville Police Department officer in over a century to die in the line of duty.
