Police officer charged with gun offences

A Victoria Police officer will face charges, including letting an unlicensed person carry a gun. (AAP)

A Victoria Police officer will face court after he allegedly let an unlicensed person carry a long-barrelled gun.

Police said they charged the 40-year-old senior constable from the state's eastern region after an internal investigation.

His eight charges included three counts of failing to store firearms in the correct way, three counts of permitting an unlicensed person to carry a longarm, failing to notify police of his change of address, and failing to store ammunition in the right manner.

Victoria Police allege the offending happened while the officer was off duty on May 2 last year.

The senior constable has been summonsed to appear at a magistrates' court at a later date.
