Police say they are investigating reports that a woman is following children in Newark.
There have been numerous reports on social media that a woman is following children on their way to and from school, causing panic between parents and their children who live locally.
Nottinghamshire Police has now confirmed they are carrying out enquiries and following up on these reports, saying they are aware of rumours circulating on social media.
They have reassured the local community that there were no reported attempts to touch any child during these incidents and, while they are asking parents to remain vigilant regarding their young children's safety, they said there was "nothing to suggest" there was a specific risk in the town currently.
Inspector Matthew Ward, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We are carrying out ongoing enquiries into reports of a woman following people and children in the Newark area and causing distress.
“We treat allegations of this nature extremely seriously and we have spoken to a woman in connection with these reports.
“I understand the concerns of parents in light of these reports and we are aware of subsequent discussion and rumour on social media, however there were no reported attempts to touch any child during these incidents.
"We always advise parents to be vigilant when it comes to the safety of young children, however there is nothing to suggest there is a specific risk at this time.”
Anyone with concerns about suspicious activity of this nature is urged to please report it by calling Nottinghamshire Police on 101.
