POLICE have locked down part of the M8 after reports of a man with a 'weapon'.

Shortly before 9am on Monday, February 3, officers received a report of a man with a possible weapon on the motorway's eastbound slip road at Junction 6 (Newhouse Junction) in Lanarkshire.

Due to the situation, police are in the area and a search is being carried out.

Specialist officers are also in attendance at the incident as a precaution and urgent enquiries are ongoing.

Meanwhile, the force has said the M8 is currently shut at Junction 6's eastbound carriageway for Newhouse and Chapelhall.

Officers are urging drivers to 'avoid the area' while investigations are carried out.

A spokesperson for Traffic Scotland said: "M8 eastbound to A8 off-slip at Junction 6A.

"Roundabout at end of off-slip currently restricted due to an ongoing police incident.

"Road users in the area are advised to find alternative routes at this time."
