Police lock down Edinburgh street after 'armed men' launch attack

Police in Edinburgh have locked down a residential street following a violent disturbance on Monday afternoon.

Officers were called to Ardshiel Avenue in the western area of Clermiston shortly after 12pm on October 10 after horrified residents saw a car crash to a halt outside a property and the driver get into a fight with a man armed with a pair of wooden planks. A hammer and a knife are also reportedly to have been wielded during the confrontation.

Edinburgh Live reports eyewitnesses claiming to have seen three men arguing with an older male in the street. Locals say scuffle broke out and they heard "screaming" prior to the emergency services arriving on the scene.

Police and ambulance crews arrived on the scene shortly thereafter. Images from the scene showed paramedics treating a man on the ground, and fitting him with an oxygen mask.

An eyewitness to the commotion told the Record that a silver Mini had crashed outside the property, setting off the chain of events that led to police locking down the street.

The local, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals, said: "The Mini banged right into the outside of the property and knocked over two buckets. I heard this commotion and saw someone coming out onto the street with two boards of wood in his hands.

"The driver of the Mini got out the car and started fighting with the man that had the boards of wood. He was getting hit over the head, punches were being thrown, all of that.

"Then a van came speeding along the road and the driver got out - he had a hammer in his hand, and he was hitting the passenger in the Mini. It was horrible.

"The Mini driver was in a bad way on the ground. He had blood all over his head, and I saw him get carted off in an ambulance.

"The police arrived within minutes, I'll give them their dues. Police, ambulance, CID - it was all over pretty quickly but they've closed off part of the street."

Police are carrying out enquiries. It is not known if any arrests have been made.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers were alerted to a disturbance and a road collision on Ardshiel Avenue at around 12:15pm. Officers are at the scene and are gathering information."
