Hyderabad traffic police launched a special drive against tampering of vehicle registration plates, fixing of irregular numbers, and vehicles moving without register plates, apart from fixing modified silencers and horns, black films and affixing stickers on vehicles/windscreen revealing their profession, occupation official designation etc.
Till Saturday, the police booked 9,387 cases pertaining to number plate violations, 3,270 and 4,280 cases of noise pollution and black films/stickers, respectively.
“These offences are considered as contributors of not only traffic violations, but also criminal activities,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) AV Ranganath said.
He said that the motor vehicle rules specify that the unique number plate, which is issued by the RTA., should be mandatory and registration letters and numbers shall be in black on white background for two-wheelers/LMV cars, and with black letter on yellow background for commercial vehicles. “Fancy/fiber or plastic lettering is not permitted. Other names, pictures, arts should not be displayed, and registration numbers should not be tampered or covered by any material,” he said.
Horns
According to MV Act, no motor vehicle shall be fitted with any multi-toned horn giving a succession of different notes or with any other sound-producing device giving an unduly harsh, shrill, loud or alarming noise, he said.
He further said that every motor vehicle shall be fitted with a device (silencer) which by means of an expansion chamber or otherwise reduces as far as practicable, the noise that would otherwise be made by the escape of exhaust gases from the engine.
