Police launch investigation after Manchester Islamic Centre is vandalised in 'politically motivated' attack

Police have launched an investigation after an Islamic Centre in Manchester was vandalised with graffiti in the early hours of Thursday morning (October 26). Officers were initially called to the centre, on Sidney Street, to reports of criminal damage.

Enquiries so far suggest a small group had vandalised the premises with graffiti. A criminal investigation has now been launched into the incident, which police believe to be politically motivated and linked to events and protests in Iran.

Greater Manchester Police is appealing for anyone with information to come forward as they increase patrols in the area to reassure the community. They added that the force will 'not tolerate these acts of vandalism'.

A spokesperson for the force said: "At around 00:30am today (October 27) Greater Manchester Police were called to a report of criminal damage at the Islamic Centre on Sidney Street, Manchester. Officers attended the scene and initial enquires suggest that a small group had vandalised the premises with graffiti."

Chief Inspector Wignall, of GMP’s City of Manchester division, added: "After reports of criminal damage at Manchester Islamic Centre, we have launched a criminal investigation to find the people responsible. We believe this incident is politically motivated linked to events in relation to Iran and several lines of enquiry are being explored.

"Positive action has taken place in recent weeks to provide reassurance to the local community and we will continue with our patrols to ensure people feel safe as we understand the impact this will have. Greater Manchester Police will not tolerate these acts of vandalism despite the right to protest and I would urge anyone with information they may feel will help to contact us."

The attack comes one month after a similar incident, when a group sprayed graffiti onto the building.
