Police issue warning on people trying to get into your house

Police have issued a warning of what to look out for in distraction burglaries.

Officers from the Ellesmere Port branch of Cheshire Police issued advice on what to do if people come across distraction burglaries. Police described how people may disguise themselves or distract a person in order to gain entry into homes.

This includes people pretending to be from a care agency, the council or a utility company investigating a gas or water leak. The burglars may also ask to leave a note for a neighbour or ask for a drink of water if they claim to be thirsty or unwell.

Sometimes the suspects may claim to be in a hurry or say it’s an emergency so need to get into your home quickly. They can also work in teams, with one person distracting the homeowner while the other searches the house.

Police said there are a number of ways to prevent it, these include:

  • Use your door viewer to see who’s there before answering.
  • If you open the door, put the chain on first.
  • Always ask for ID and check it with the company before letting somebody into your home.

Use the phone number that’s printed on your monthly statements as the number on their identity card may be fake. Close the door while you do this.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Remember that genuine callers won’t mind checks. If you feel at all unsure, schedule a time for the caller to come back when a friend or relative is there. Pre-planned appointments with utility companies, a password scheme can be set up.

"If you feel threatened or in danger by the presence of the caller, call 999. Always remember 'if in doubt, keep them out'. Look out for your elderly or vulnerable neighbours as they may be targeted."
