Police issue update on missing mum 'likely feeling scared' and newborn baby

Police have issued an update on a mum who went missing with her newborn baby and partner.

Constance Marten is being urged to contact the emergency services or go to the nearest hospital, having been believed to have given birth "very recently". Neither her or her child have been seen by a doctor.

She was last seen with the baby's father Mark Gordon, at about 6.30pm on Thursday. Police said the pair's vehicle broke down near junction four of the M61 on January 5 and the family left safely on foot, reports the Manchester Evening News.

In an update yesterday, police said they believed Constance had been seen in Essex, more than 250 miles away, at about 9am at a port where ferries operate from. Now GMP say the latest sighting came an hour later, about 20 miles away in Colchester.

Greater Manchester Police said they are becoming "increasingly concerned for the welfare of the newborn baby". They said Mark was orginally wearing dark clothing, Constance had a burgundy coat and the baby was swaddled.

The force said: "With it being three days now, officers are becoming increasingly concerned for the welfare of the new born baby which is everyone's priority and are asking for Constance and any members of the public who have any information to reach out to ensure they are safe and well.

"Mark was originally wearing dark clothing and Constance, who has a southern accent, was wearing a burgundy coat. The new born was swaddled.

"Since then officers believe they have seen a sighting of Constance in a red shawl near to Harwich Port in Essex at around 9am yesterday (Saturday 7 January 2023) before the last sighting coming shortly after at around 10am in Colchester. Anyone with information should contact Greater Manchester Police via 999 quoting 2657 05/01/23. GMP can also be contacted via gmp.police.uk.

"Information can also be shared anonymously via the independent charity – Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

A CCTV image of a woman in Essex believed to be Constance has been released (GMP)

The force also issued a new CCTV image who they believe is to be Constance in Essex. The image shows the woman with her hair in a bun and a red blanket over her.

GMP's Head of Public Protection, Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr, previously issued a direct plea to Constance. She said: "As a mum, I would like to make a direct appeal to Constance. Constance, I know this is an exceptionally hard time for you and you are likely feeling scared but I promise that our number one priority is the same as yours – to keep your beautiful new born safe.

"As you know, it’s really important that both you and your baby are assessed by medical professionals as soon as possible so please make contact with emergency services or make your way to your nearest hospital, wherever that may be. I would also like to appeal to members of the public – not just in Bolton but across Greater Manchester and beyond."
