A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said the cyclist was taken to hospital and the driver remained at the scene. In an update today, police said the man suffered serious injuries following the crash.

He is currently in a stable condition. Heygarth Road and Hillary Road was closed while officers continued their enquiries and has since been reopened.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has any information is asked to call Merseyside Police's Matrix Roads Policing Unit on (0151) 777 5747, email SCIU@merseyside.police.uk, or DM @MerPolCC on Twitter quoting log 341 of Tuesday 11 July.
