A woman has been released under investigation after a BMW was ploughed into a shop in Tameside, causing the entire building to crumble.
Emergency services raced to the scene, on Canterbury Street, in Ashton-under-Lyne on Thursday evening (January 5) after the major crash, which saw the shop and bedsit above it reduced to rubble.
Dramatic pictures from the scene showed how the BMW had become wedged in the property, with debris and heaps of bricks piled around it. Horrifying CCTV footage shared with the Manchester Evening News also captured the moment the crash happened.

A woman managed to escape from the car and was checked over by paramedics before being arrested on suspicion of drink driving and taken into custody. There were no other casualties reported in the incident, but some nearby homes were evacuated as a safety precaution.
In an update on Friday evening (January 6), Greater Manchester Police have confirmed the woman who was arrested at the scene, has since been released under investigation.
The BMW had been crashed into Alan Fish LTD, an electricals shop on the corner. It was the second time a car has hit the shop, with another incident leaving the brickwork badly damaged last September.
Following the incident, nearby residents said it was an ‘accident waiting to happen’ and told of how they have been campaigning for speed bumps in the area for years.
