Police issue fine warning to drivers waiting at airports

Police have warned they will issue fines to anyone they find attempting to dodge airport parking fees by using a "hard shoulder" to wait.

A driver was left red-faced after being called out for an attempt to dodge a parking fee over the weekend. After a car parked on a hard shoulder "waiting for a relative to land" at Manchester Airport, alongside the A555 (Airport Spur) road, just off the M56, they were soon shamed online.

Great Manchester Police shared a photo of the car after it was spotted by officers. The owner claimed they were simply waiting for a family member to arrive but were issued with a penalty notice due to motorway regulations being enforced.

This isn't the first time police have had to get involved with drivers parking on the M56 as they have warned fines will be issued if caught.

North West Motorway Police previously said: "The hard shoulder is not a safe place to be waiting for those coming off flights and when caught it is much more expensive than the airport charges!"

Sharing the picture of the recently spotted driver on Sunday, GMP Traffic wrote: "Hard shoulder offence at the Airport spur. M56 motorway regulations in force. Waiting for relative to land at the airport. Various parking areas locally. GFPN issued and advised accordingly."

Currently, drivers picking up or dropping off from the airport have to pull into the designated areas. All passengers can use the free drop-off area located in JetParks1 where they can take a short shuttle ride to the terminals.
