UPDATE: A controlled explosion has been carried out and the cordon stood down.
RESIDENTS have been urged to stay in their homes after a “potentially suspicious item” was found at Edinburgh’s Portobello beach.
Police cordoned off the area opposite the junction of Kings Road and Kings Place, Portobello, and urged members of the public to avoid the area on Tuesday.
Officers were called out to the popular tourist spot at around 9.50am.
A cordon was put in place and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was contacted. They then carried out a controlled explosion of "an unexploded wartime munition".
A statement from Police Scotland read: "Around 9.50am on Tuesday 15 April 2025 officers were made aware of a potentially suspicious item on Portobello beach.
"EOD was contacted and a cordon was put in place near the junction of Kings Road and Kings Place.
"The item was found to be an unexploded wartime munition, and a controlled explosion took place, after which the cordon was lifted.
"There is no threat to the wider public."
