Police investigating Walbottle school fight that left student with head injury

Northumbria Police are investigating a fight that broke out at a Newcastle school which left a pupil with head injuries.

Emergency services were called to Walbottle Campus on Wednesday after scenes described as a "riot" by a witness .

One student needed medical treatment and several others have been expelled after the violent incident.

The school was rated inadequate by  Ofsted  in February for failing to control a significant minority of "wilfully disobedient" pupils.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly after 11.30am on Wednesday we received a report of a fight at Walbottle High school.

"Officers and emergency services attended and spoke to a 14-year-old pupil who had sustained minor injuries

"Enquiries into this incident are ongoing."

She said parents have "concerns" about disruption at the school, adding: "It sounds like the teachers have lost control. I'm constantly hearing, when I ask 'what did you do today', that in most lessons we did nothing because an incident happened and teachers had to deal with it."

A spokesperson for Walbottle Campus told ChronicleLive on Wednesday that "staff defused the situation immediately and all pupils involved have now been excluded".

School bosses have vowed to take action on violence and summon the parents of the children involved to the school for talks.

A spokesperson for the  North East Ambulance Service   confirmed paramedics "treated and discharged one patient at the scene."
