Police arrest man after 'suspicious' death of woman in Melbourne's inner north

Police have arrested a man as they investigate the death of a woman in Melbourne's inner north on Wednesday.

Officers were called to a house on Brickworks Lane in Northcote just before 8pm, after a family member found the 51-year-old woman's body.

In a statement, Victoria Police described the death as "suspicious" and said a crime scene had been set up.

"Investigators will await the results of a post mortem today to determine the Northcote woman's cause of death," the statement said.

Hours later, police said they had arrested a 52-year-old Northcote man, who had been taken into custody to be interviewed.

Police said they believed the man and woman were known to each other.

Forensic investigators have been examining the garage where the woman's body was found.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via their website.
