A spokeswoman for South Wales Police said that there are "no suspicious circumstances" and added that the girl's family was currently being supported by specialist officers. A police investigation is under way on behalf of HM Coroner.

Eyewitnesses said there was a large police presence at the junction of Gelli Deg and Cefn Craig on Thursday evening. Local councillor Jayne Cowan said: ""We would like to pass on our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the young girl who has sadly passed away. We know that everyone in Rhiwbina will feel as we all do in hearing this tragic news."
