The area was cordoned off for a time on Tuesday morning as officers gathered evidence.

In a brief statement, a PSNI spokesman said: “The Donegall Square North in Belfast is now clear following an earlier one vehicle road traffic collision this morning (Tuesday 22nd March).

“Shortly after 11:20am, it was reported that a male pedestrian aged in his 70s was struck by a car in the area. He was taken to hospital following the incident.

“Enquiries are continuing and police would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have dash-cam footage available to contact them on 101, quoting reference number 574 22/03/22.”

Later on Tuesday, the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said they received a 999 call at 11.20am "following reports of an RTC involving a pedestrian at Donegal Square West in Belfast".

NIAS despatched two emergency crews to the incident, they added.

A spokesman said: "Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, the patient was taken by ambulance to the RVH."
