Authorities in Rochester Hills, Michigan, are investigating a shooting incident that left at least nine people injured at a crowded recreation area on Saturday afternoon. The gunman, a 42-year-old man who has not been named, arrived at the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad, where he opened fire with a Glock 9 mm handgun, firing potentially 28 times, according to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.
The victims, including two small children and their mother, were taken to local hospitals with varying injuries. An 8-year-old boy is in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head, while his 4-year-old brother is in stable condition after being shot in the thigh. Their mother, aged 39, is also in critical condition with wounds to the abdomen and leg. Additionally, six other victims, ranging in age from 30 to 78, are in stable condition.
The motive for the attack remains unclear, as the suspect has no known connection to the victims. Authorities are working to piece together a timeline of the shooting and are investigating whether the suspect had any digital or paper trail that could provide insight into his actions.
The incident has shocked the community, which is still recovering from previous mass shootings in the state. The shooting at the splash pad adds to the list of around 220 mass shootings in the country so far this year, as reported by the Gun Violence Archive.
Law enforcement responded swiftly to the shooting, tracing the weapon used to a nearby home where the suspect was found deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police recovered multiple firearms from the home, including an AR-platform firearm found on the kitchen table.
Officials are continuing their investigation, analyzing video evidence and bullet fragments from the scene. The community is reeling from the tragedy, with local and state officials expressing their condolences and support for the affected families.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer stated that she is monitoring the situation closely and in contact with local authorities as more details emerge.
